2024 Paris Olympics: Japanese Athletes to Wear New Infrared-Absorbing Uniforms

3

At the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, Japanese athletes in sports like volleyball and track and field will wear competition uniforms made from a cutting-edge infrared-absorbing fabric. This innovative material, inspired by stealth aircraft technology that deflects radar signals, is designed to offer enhanced privacy protection for athletes.

The Importance of Privacy Protection

Back in 2020, Japanese athletes discovered that their infrared photos were being circulated on social media with suggestive captions, raising serious privacy concerns. According to The Japan Times, these complaints prompted the Japan Olympic Committee to take action. As a result, Mizuno, Sumitomo Metal Mining, and Kyoei Printing Co., Ltd. collaborated to develop a new fabric that not only provides the necessary flexibility for athletic wear but also effectively safeguards athletes' privacy.

Innovative Infrared-Absorbing Technology

Mizuno's experiments demonstrated that when a piece of fabric printed with a black letter "C" is covered with this new infrared-absorbing material, the letter becomes nearly invisible when photographed with an infrared camera. This fabric uses special fibers to absorb the infrared radiation emitted by the human body, making it difficult for infrared cameras to capture images of the body or undergarments. This feature helps prevent privacy invasions, allowing athletes to fully focus on their performance.

Versatility and Comfort

The innovative uniforms are made from a fiber called "Dry Aero Flow Rapid," which contains a special mineral that absorbs infrared radiation. This absorption not only prevents unwanted photography but also promotes sweat evaporation, offering excellent cooling performance.

Balancing Privacy Protection and Comfort

While multiple layers of this infrared-absorbing fabric provide better privacy protection, athletes have expressed concerns about the potential for extreme heat at the upcoming Paris Olympics. Therefore, the design of these uniforms must strike a balance between privacy protection and keeping athletes cool and comfortable.
